Grand Opening - Audubon Historical Society Museum
After more than fifty years in the making, the Audubon Historical Society proudly announces the opening of its own museum. The Audubon Historical Society Museum, itself a bit of history, is located on the second floor of the Audubon Senior Center at the corner of Oakland Avenue and Oak Street. The red brick building, once known as Audubon School No. 1, opened in 1905. There will be an open house to the public on July 4th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
The museum, which will feature Audubon-related photos and memorabilia, will always be a work in progress. A few of the cabinets will be permanent displays while others will rotate collections based on certain themes. The initial plan is to rotate twice a year, keeping the museum fresh and interesting. One of the current collections celebrates this year’s 100th anniversary of Audubon High School, with some items on loan to the High School for their celebration year.
Members of the Audubon Historical Society have been receiving donations of historical photos and memorabilia since the club’s inception in 1972. Walter Casebeer, a founding and longtime member of the Historical Society, always had a vision to build a museum to help Audubon remember its past. The idea began to take root before his passing in 2008 and was reinvigorated in 2018 when the Borough of Audubon received a grant from Camden County to scan hundreds of photos. Historical Society members and Audubon High School students contributed to this effort, scanning many photos and documents. Then, in 2025, the borough used some local funds and an additional grant from the county to purchase display cases, filing cabinets, and digital scanners.
The volunteer members of Audubon Historical Society plan to open the museum one Saturday each month. Additionally, special tours can be arranged for class trips for students in the district. The long-term goal will be to have an index of all the society holdings for those interested in doing research. The group is seeking new members as this process will take time and require additional help.
The historical society continues to accept memorabilia donations, with some stipulations. The museum does have a limited supply of some memorabilia that is for sale when visiting the museum.
